NEWTON – The top-ranked Newton Eagles defeated Gilmer, 51-31, in battle of state heavyweights Friday night.

Newton (4-0), which ran its winning streak to 19 games, took control with 30 consecutive points after falling behind, 15-7, early.

Darwin Barlow ripped off a 49-yard touchdown run, Josh Foster reached paydirt from 18 yards, and Barlow caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from receiver Tamauzia Brown on a trick play.

Mason Hurt threw for a couple touchdowns in the Gilmer (2-3) loss.

Newton is off next week, while Gilmer plays host to Bullard.
