LEANDER -- East Texas sent five teams to the Division I 7-on-7 state tournament, but only two won at least one game during bracket play.

Lufkin had the best weekend of East Texas' 5A and 4A competitors. After entering the event undefeated this summer, the Panthers won their pool -- dubbed the "Pool of Death" -- then blew out two teams in the first two rounds of the championship bracket before Arlington Bowie pulled away late.

Lufkin tallied a 46-14 victory against Mesquite Poteet and a 49-27 win against Pasadena Memorial to reach the D-I championship bracket quarterfinals, where Bowie scored twice in the final 10 minutes -- including once defensively -- for a 48-27 Volunteer victory.

John Tyler suffered an 0-3 Friday pool performance, but rebounded Saturday, winning twice in the consolation bracket.

The Lions beat Edcouch-Elsa 51-40 before knocking off Pearland Dawson 39-26 in the round of 16. College Station A&M Consolidated eliminated John Tyler in the consolation quarterfinals, 45-27.

A&M Consolidated also knocked out Longview. The Lobos fell 54-26 to the Tigers in a first-round consolation game after going 1-2 in Friday's pool play.

Whitehouse joined Lufkin as the only East Texas teams in the championship bracket. The Wildcats got a tough draw in Lake Travis and almost won, but the Cavaliers scored with about a minute and a half left as a receiver got free behind the defense for a long touchdown pass in the 40-35 LT victory.

Whitehouse finished the tournament 2-2. The Wildcats, who lost their two games by a combined 12 points, scored 108 points in the first two Friday pool games: a 60-32 win vs. Weslaco and a 48-40 win vs. Plano West.

Like Longview, Tyler Lee fell in the first round of the consolation bracket. The Red Raiders, who were 0-3 in pool play, dropped a 31-25 decision to San Antonio Johnson on Saturday morning.
