ALTO -- Special teams made a huge difference for Elkhart in Friday night's 36-35 season-opening victory at Alto.

Sophomore Zack Gray returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and totaled 136 yards on four returns. He also caught two passes for 96 yards and a touchdown.

Elkhart's Austin Sheridan scooped up a blocked field goal and scored from 87 yards for a game-changing play.

Senior tailback Jeffery Wilson picked up where he left off from 2012, when he ran for 2,329 yards and 26 touchdowns. Wilson carried 20 times Friday for 150 yards and two touchdowns. He also scored twice on two-point conversions and picked off a pass on defense.

Elkhart's Gaje Smock finished with a team-high 16 tackles.

Elkhart visits Frankston on Friday. Alto, which opened the season ranked No. 3 in the Associated Press Class A poll, hosts Groveton.
