The fifth Division I football scholarship choice came to Makyle Sanders on Friday.

Northwestern State has joined Central Arkansas, Memphis, Missouri State and Navy in the chase for the Tyler Lee safety. Sanders, a rising senior, announced the news through his Twitter account.

The Demons have a very good history recruiting within East Texas.

Three local players signed with the program this past National Signing Day in Chapel Hill kicking specialist Austyn Fendrick, Chapel Hill offensive lineman Jeremy West and Lindale receiver Kendrick Price Jr.

On the field, Northwestern State went 4-7 last season. The campaign was highlighted by a season-ending home win against Stephen F. Austin in Natchitoches, La.

Jay Thomas will begin a fourth season with the Demons program in September. He has a 16-19 record at the school.

Sanders (6-1, 177) racked up 105 tackles with two interceptions and 12 passes broken up for Lee last season. The team finished 5-5 in 2015 and tied for third place in District 11-6A, but it missed the postseason on tiebreakers.

Lee will remain in 11-6A this fall and welcomes a few new district mates in longtime rivals John Tyler and Longview. Mesquite, Mesquite Horn, North Mesquite, Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath make up the rest of the league.

Sanders, like all high school football prospects preparing to enter their senior year, will become eligible to sign with any school that offers him in February.
