EMORY -- No. 25 Rains kicked off District 14-4A play the right way with a narrow, 29-27, 25-22, 17-25, 23-25, 15-13 victory against Canton.

Ashley Gowin played a big role on defense with 30 digs as did Courtney Luckett and Charlotte Bradshaw with 28 digs apiece in the victory.

The Lady Cats scored in all sorts of ways. Gowin and Bradshaw led the way with 32 combined kills while Corley Cole and Bradshaw added 20 blocks.

Cole, Gowin, Luckett, Shelbi Sheppard also combined for six aces with Cole recording a team-best three aces in the match.

Rains will enjoy an open date on Friday and hosts Wills Point next week.

 

 No.2 Beckville Sweeps Timpson

BECKVILLE -- Beckville dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 in the latest Class 2A poll, but it's still clearly in that first breath of teams aiming for the state title.

The Ladycats swept Timpson by a score of 25-6, 25-6, 25-10 in the their home gym to elevate their District 20-2A record to 3-0.

Beckville scored 52 of the points it needed. Timpson chipped in the other 23 through various unforced errors.

Kassidy Alexander set up 29 of the 32 points the Ladycats scored on kills. Carson Blair scored a team-best nine kills.

Kimber Wesner served up six aces as part of the team's eye-popping 15 in the match.

Kinley Blair recorded a team-best three blocks.

The Ladycats will Shelbyville on Friday.

 

Gary Sweeps Leverett's Chapel

GARY -- Gary moved to 3-1 in District 20-2A competition with a 25-23, 25-14, 25-23 victory against Leverett's Chapel.

Leann Youngblood and Sydner Ritter got into double digits with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.

Gary will visit Carlisle on Friday.

 

Hughes Springs Fends Off Daingerfield

DAINGERFIELD -- Hughes Springs notched another non-district win, 25-20, 25-23, 25-11 against Daingerfield.

Peyton Blythe led the way with six aces, six kills, 10 assists plus seven digs on the defensive side of the equation. Kelsey Echols also served up six aces in the match.

Savannah Wright recorded a team-best nine assists.

 

Quitman Pushes Past Edgewood

EDGEWOOD -- Quitman was up against it from the fourth set onward but rallied to take down Edgewood with a 25-27, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18-, 15-11 victory.

Sophomore Cammie Hicks recorded a team-best 42 assists in the match.

Kaci Raley and Molly Tanner broke double digit scoring with 19 and 12 kills, respectively. Tanner also scored five aces in the match.

Quitman will host Mineola on Friday.
