It was a special night in Grapeland on Friday night for the Elkhart Elks, and one in particular.

Junior running back Jeffery Wilson rushed for 345 yards and four touchdowns in a little more than one half of football in Elkhart's 49-2 victory, which happened to be the Elks' first win of the season.

For his efforts, Wilson (6-0, 185) is the ETSN.fm Dairy Queen Offensive Player of the Week.

Wilson ran 22 times for 325 yards and all four scores in the first two quarters, only getting three carries in the third quarter of Elkhart's lopsided victory.

"Our offensive did a tremendous job paving the way," Elkhart's first-year coach Sam Wells said. "Nobody ever got close to Jeffrey, really until he got into the secondary and then he’d make them miss. There’s no telling how many yards he would have had if he had stayed in the whole game."

Wells is no stranger to coaching talented running backs. He watched current UT-San Antonio freshman Treston Coleman tear up opposing defenses on a regular basis the last couple of seasons as head coach at Frankston.

"Coleman was a very special player, obviously," Wells said. "Jeffery’s kind of a little bit different back. He’s got good good vision like Treston does, his skills are similar but with a different body type. Jeffrey’s got a few more moves that get him out of trouble. He has spins and good ball skills, and he’s able to catch the ball out of the backfield.

"He’s a complete back, he blocks well when we need him to. But performance-wise, it’s right up there among the best I’ve ever coached.”

All the yards and touchdowns added up to win No. 1 for Elkhart.

“It was great," Wells said of last Friday's win. "These kids over here are great. They’ve been working hard to clean up the mistakes. Turnovers have just killed us in our first three ball games. We came out and drove the ball on the first drive and kept rolling from there.”

Elkhart (1-3) plays host to Joaquin (4-0), the No. 5-ranked team in Class A, on Friday night.
