Staff Predictions

  • Longview and Lufkin will play twice this year: first on Sept. 20 in a non-district matchup at Longview's Lobo Stadium, then in the Class 5A Division II Region II championship game. Both teams lost in the Region II semifinals last year (Austin Westlake def. Longview, Plano West def. Lufkin). -- Gabe Brooks and Clint Buckley
  • Kilgore and Chapel Hill will play twice this year: first on Oct. 25 in a District 16-3A game, then in the Class 3A Division I Region II championship game. Kilgore reached the Division I state semifinals last year, while Chapel Hill won the 2011 D-I state crown. -- Gabe Brooks and Clint Buckley
  • Carthage will play Jasper or Palestine in the Class 3A Division I Region III championship game. Jasper and Palestine are likely to play in the first round of the playoffs. The winner may have to get through Silsbee, which lost to Carthage in last year's regional final, to get to the Region III title game. -- Gabe Brooks
  • Gilmer will play in the Class 3A Division II state championship game for the second consecutive season. If the Buckeyes reach the title game, it'll be their fifth championship game appearance in 10 years (2-2 in first four appearances). -- Gabe Brooks and Clint Buckley
  • Newton will play in the Class 2A Division I state championship game. The Eagles reached the D-I state semifinals last year before losing to eventual champion Cameron Yoe. -- Gabe Brooks and Clint Buckley
  • Tenaha will play in its third consecutive Class A Division II state championship game. Tenaha lost in last year's title game after winning the 2011 crown. -- Gabe Brooks and Clint Buckley
