ETSN.fm Football Recruiting Combine: Longview’s Ja’Mycal Hasty Top Overall Offensive Performer

TYLER -- Longview running back Ja'Mycal Hasty showed flashes of explosiveness in the Lobos' backfield in 2012 as a sophomore playing behind 1,200-yard rusher Tory White.

And with White's graduation, Hasty is expected to carry the load in head coach John King's run-heavy offense in the fall.

Just two days after Longview wrapped up spring practice, Hasty began his summer by turning heads at the inaugural ETSN.fm Football Recruiting Combine on Sunday at Accelerate Performance Enhancement Center (APEC) in Tyler.

Hasty was voted both the top running back and overall offensive MVP at the event, which drew 100 of the top 2014 and 2015 football recruits in East Texas.

"I was excited because there were a lot of guys that competed," said Hasty when asked about the honors. "And for me to get the running back award and the offensive award, I was very happy with that."

Hasty, who measured at 5-9 3/4 and 181.2 pounds in shoes, ran the fastest laser-timed 40-yard dash of all that competed at 4.39. He also had one of the highest vertical jumps at the combine at 39 inches.

"It's real fun, especially being here with guys in East Texas that I know and that I read about constantly on the Internet," said Hasty, who was offered by Texas Tech last month. "It's just a fun deal having fun with those guys and competing against the best."

Hasty ran for 338 yards and five touchdowns in 2012, but turned it up in the playoffs when White went down with an injury in a second-round blowout of Dallas Jesuit. In that game, Hasty posted 102 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

The Lobos running back, who totaled 73 yards and a touchdown in Longview's spring game last Friday, said he's excited about what figures to be an expanded role in the offense.

"I'm really looking forward to it," he said. "The main thing about it is I just gotta get in shape, getting in better to shape to get however many carries I need in order to help my team win."
