JACKSONVILLE -- Jared Twomey went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, helping Carthage to a 17-0 rout of Groesbeck, which completed the sweep of their Class 3A Region III bi-district playoff series.

Carthage will face West next week in the area round of the playoffs. Game 1 is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday in Jacksonville. Game 2 will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Ennis, with a third game to follow if necessary.

William Rittenberry improved to 7-1 on the mound, allowing just one hit over five innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Samuel Chhor was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Blake Bogenschutz went 3-for-3 with a triple, double and two RBIs in the win.

Elkhart Battles Back to Eliminate Hemphill

LUFKIN -- The 10th-ranked Elkhart Elks used an eight-run second inning en route to a 14-3 win over Hemphill in the decisive Game 3 of their Class 2A Region III bi-district playoff series Saturday at Morris Frank Park.

Elkhart, which dropped the series opener 5-3 on Thursday, forced the third game with a 10-4 victory on Friday night.

The Elks advanced to the area round of the playoffs where they will face Sabine. The site has yet to be determined, but Game 1 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday. The series resumes at 1 p.m. Saturday, with a third game to follow if needed.
