The two-time defending Carthage Bulldogs extended their state-best winning streak to 39 games last Friday night, but by the narrowest of margins.

The No. 1 Bulldogs advanced to their fourth-straight state quarterfinal with an exciting 50-49 overtime win over Midlothian Heritage, and their senior quarterback led the way.

Gunner Capps passed for a season-high 401 yards with five touchdowns to keep Carthage's season alive. For his efforts, Capps is the ETSN.fm/Dairy Queen Offensive Player of the Week.

He follows last week's winner, Garrison running back Sabastion Porter.

Capps' 3-yard touchdown pass to Kaden Holcomb and the ensuing PAT with no time remaining sent the game to overtime, where Carthage won with a two-point conversion from Kelvontay Dixon.

For the season, Capps has completed 229 of 366 attempts for 3,299 yards with 40 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Capps and his Carthage (13-0) teammates face district rival Henderson (9-4) in a Class 4A Division I state quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m. Friday from Longview's Lobo Stadium.
