Gilmer Pulls Away from Atlanta in Fourth Quarter for 45-30 Win
GILMER -- Two late touchdowns helped Gilmer hold off Atlanta, 45-30, on Friday night in District 7-4A Division II action.
The Buckeyes (7-2, 3-1) held on to a one-point lead after Atlanta's Andrew Samples hit Austin Brown for a 67-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. But Gilmer was able to put the game out of reach on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Aaron 'Poppy' Brown and a 93-yard interception return by Braydon Bates.
Brandon Webb gave Gilmer a 31-24 lead going into the final quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run. That followed consecutive Atlanta touchdowns from Samples (1 yard) and Jawan King (76 yards), which tied the game at 24-24.
Gilmer took a 24-12 lead early in the second half when Webb returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.
Brown threw for 166 yards for Gilmer, while King rushed for 201 yards for Atlanta (4-5, 1-3) and Samples threw for 262 yards in the loss.
