MOUNT PLEASANT -- J.J. Green accounted for three touchdowns and Marshall's defense held Mount Pleasant to 124 yards of offense in a 40-0 Mavericks win on Friday in District 16-5A action.

Green threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 52 yards and another score for Marshall (3-4, 3-0), which is tied with Greenville for first in the district.

Rodarius Smith accounted for 119 of Marshall's 188 rushing yards on 14 carries, while Tahj Washington rushed for a touchdown and caught four passes for 79 yards and a score.

Green's other touchdown pass went to DeKendrick Bender, who finished with two catches for 31 yards.

Marshall cruised to a 31-0 lead at halftime, thanks to two quick scores in the second quarter's first 2:29. Washington's touchdown run gave Marshall a 14-0 lead with 10:52 left in the half and Joquan Bass followed with a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown just 1:22 later.

Green added a touchdown run and Jacob Suarez hit a 31-yard field goal to give the Mavericks their 31-point lead at the break.

Marshall's defense, which also forced a safety in the second half, held Mount Pleasant quarterback Josh Morris to just 22 yards on 2 of 8 passing. Juan Ottino led the Tigers in rushing with 48 yards on the ground.
