John Tyler Offense Erupts In 49-13 Win Over Plano West to Open 2017 Season
PLANO -- John Tyler racked up 666 yards of offense -- with 200 coming from running back Cameron Grant -- in a 49-13 rout of Plano West on Friday night in the 2017 season opener.
Grant scored two touchdowns for the JT rushing attack, which amassed 517 yards on the ground and averaged more than 11 yards per carry in the win, despite losing four fumbles.
Roderick Hawkins added 149 yards and a touchdown -- an 80-yarder -- on nine carries, while Devlen Woods and Victor Campbell Jr. combined for another 158. Campbell Jr. also scored a touchdown in the win.
JT rebounded from an early 6-0 deficit on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Woods to Ke'Andre Street to give JT a 7-6 lead, and the Lions never looked back. Woods completed 11 of 17 passes for 135 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
The Lions scored another 28 points, which included 6- and 55-yard touchdown runs by Grant, before Plano West could answer again. Javon Pippins made the score 35-13 on a 38-yard run, but JT quickly responded with Hawkins' 80-yard touchdown run.
Street finished with five catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns, and Javion Williams also caught a 14-yard touchdown from K'Lon Warren to make the final score.
The JT defense held Plano West to 204 yards of total offense and forced four turnovers, including three interceptions by quarterback Jake Sweeney. Hawkins added an 80-yard scoring run and Javion Williams hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from K'Lon Warren in the closing seconds.
