LONGVIEW -- Head coach John King insists on winning the battle at the line of scrimmage.

In Friday night's pivotal District 12-5A home game against Mesquite Horn, King's Longview Lobos practiced what he preaches.

Longview dominated at the point of attack on both sides of the ball, resulting in 339 rushing yards and a three-man pass rush that kept Horn's offense off-balance most of the night in a 49-30 win at Lobo Stadium.

The win pushes Longview to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in 12-5A. Combined with Mesquite's 34-33 against previously unbeaten North Mesquite, the Lobos' win makes them the only 12-5A squad with a perfect district record.

Longview amassed 501 total yards and held Horn to 112 rushing yards, 74 of which came from standout senior quarterback Destri White's scrambling ability. Longview senior defensive end DeRoderick Alexander recorded three sacks as the Lobos' three-man defensive front got consistent pressure. Senior tackle Zaycoven Henderson manned the nose guard spot and repeatedly occupied triple-teams from Horn's guards and center.

"We ran the ball extremely well and probably should have run it more, to be quite honest with you. I thought our offensive line played well," King said. "The defensive line, we played a three-man line a lot of the time, and we got good pressure with three guys and stuffed the run. The running game that they did have was not a result of the play of the defensive line. Of course, Destri had a lot to do with that, too.

Longview lost standout junior tailback JaMycal Hasty after his first carry of the game, a 21-yard gain. He missed the rest of the game with an apparent right ankle injury.

But senior L'darrius Peterson replaced him well, finishing with 181 yards on 19 carries to spearhead Longview's big night on the ground. Peterson ran for 130 yards on 10 first-half carries to help Longview set up the passing game, which produced three touchdowns en route to a 35-24 halftime lead.

"Petey's a tough running back. He got some tough yards. Some of his better runs weren't the 20- and 30-yard variety. They were 5- and 6-yard variety when he got positive yards and ran through people. He's a tough little ol' toot," King said. "The play of the fullbacks and tight ends on our off-gap power stuff, I thought they did a really good job."

Junior quarterback Dezmond Chumley threw three second-quarter touchdown passes. His fourth-down 28-yarder to senior tight end Jordan Whitaker saw the 6-foot-5 Whitaker win the ball over two Horn defenders for a 14-10 lead three minutes into the second. Chumley then hit senior Texas commit Dorian Leonard on a slant for a 60-yard catch-and-run touchdown and 21-10 advantage barely a minute later.

Following junior fullback Marquies Hunter's five-yard touchdown run and an answer from Horn on senior quarterback Destri White's three-yard touchdown, Chumley again capped a long Lobo drive with a 12-yard touchdown strike to Whitaker for a 35-17 lead with 2:03 left in the first half.

The Lobos started the second half with a punt block from senior safety Stephan Maxey. Junior linebacker Jaylon Jackson, who later recovered a fumble, picked up the blocked punt and pitched it to Henderson, who scored from 55 yards for a 42-24 Lobo lead that put the game out of reach.

White still put up big numbers despite Longview's impressive defensive performance. He completed 22 of 34 passes for 278 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception while rushing 14 times for 74 yards and a touchdown. Horn senior receiver Del'Michael High caught 11 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns, while junior Jarrison Stewart caught six passes for 137 yards and a score.

Justyn Oliphant, Horn's senior leading rusher, and Oklahoma-bound senior offensive lineman Jonathan Alvarez did not play for the Jaguars.

Whitaker caught three passes for 52 yards, while Leonard caught two for 86. Senior fullback Jeremy Powell complemented Peterson's big night with 72 yards on eight carries. Senior linebacker Kadarrius Dixon and senior safety Laurent Johnson each had a fourth-quarter interception.

Longview senior defensive end Omar French got his hand on another punt in the fourth after the Lobos had taken a 49-30 lead halfway through the third on Powell's three-yard touchdown.

Horn senior defensive back Nehemiah Wagner's first-quarter interception set up Taylor Lewis' 24-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead, the Jaguars' only of the game.

Longview visits North Mesquite (6-1, 3-1) next Friday.
