Talk about going from a major low to new heights only a select few in East Texans can understand.

Texas A&M offered Lufkin senior offensive lineman Erik McCoy on Saturday, less than 24 hours after the Panthers' season came to an end on Longview's late two-point conversion in the Class 5A Division I bi-district playoff round. The standout committed immediately and then announced the news to the world Sunday.

The Aggies' offer to McCoy is his eighth unique FBS offer and first from a Southeastern Conference school. It was his third scholarship opportunity from a major conference school behind Kansas and Oklahoma State.

The 6-4, 297-pound prospect also has FBS offers from Houston, North Texas, Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette and New Mexico State.

Landing McCoy was a major win for Texas A&M. The Aggies have dominated recruiting rivals Baylor, TCU, Texas and Texas Tech in East Texas with five committed players.

Baylor won the commitment of Longview running back JaMycal Hasty in favor of offers from Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and several out-of-state programs. It also won Gilmer athlete Blake Lynch's signature in favor of an offer from TCU among other out-of-state schools. Lynch is expected to graduate high school in December.

TCU has one East Texas commitment in the form of New Boston athlete Jeff Gladney.

The Red Raiders have one committed prospect from the region in Longview offensive lineman prospect Broderick Washington. He's expected to make a switch to Texas Tech's defensive line.

Texas has no local commitments, but it is battling with Texas Tech among others for Lufkin receiver KeKe Coutee.

All five in-state power five schools are still competing for senior Gilmer athlete Kris Boyd along with nine other programs.

Texas A&M gained an edge on North Texas with McCoy's commitment. The Mean Green have a second-best four East Texas seniors committed to their program.

Whitehouse safety Justin Dunning, Newton defensive back Roney Elam, Gladewater defensive tackle Daylon Mack and Sulphur Springs athlete Larry Pryor round out the Aggies' East Texas class.

McCoy can sign with Texas A&M on Feb. 4.
