Marshall’s Kameron King Becomes 17th Local Southern Miss Prospect
Southern Miss was back at it again within the region Tuesday.
Marshall left tackle Kameron King is the 17th local player among seniors and juniors to get a place on the Golden Eagles' big board. The news came a day after the program visited the East Texas Baptist University campus in Marshall for a summer camp in conjunction with ETBU, Texas and Texas State.
King (6-2, 275), a senior, now has five NCAA Division I FBS offers. In addition to Southern Miss, he has opportunities with Louisiana-Monroe, Memphis, North Texas and Tulane.
The Mavs’ standout was one of seven offensive linemen competing at the fifth annual ETSN Combine at APEC in Tyler on May 21. He tied for the longest broad jump at his position with a leap of 102 inches and acquitted himself well on the field during one-on-one drills against pass rushers.
Last season, King helped Marshall’s offense to 3,939 total yards in an 11-game campaign. As a sophomore, he was part of an offense that put up 5,401 total yards and went to the third round in the Class 5A Division I state playoffs.
Expectations for Marshall have jumped a bit since the end of 2016. Former SMU running backs coach Claude Mathis left his collegiate job for the head coach position in deep East Texas.
Southern Miss head coach Jay Hopson posted a 6-6 regular season record his first year in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and closed the 2016 campaign with a win against Louisiana-Lafayette in the New Orleans Bowl.
Since the season ended, Hopson hired former ETBU head coach Scotty Walden to his staff, which helps account for the Golden Eagles' explosion of interest in East Texas.
King, like all college football targets entering their senior year of high school, will first become eligible to sign with any Division I school that offers him in December.
