MESQUITE -- Tyler Lee forced Mesquite Horn to settle for field goals early Friday night at Hanby Stadium. Once Horn got its offense on track, Lee had no answer.

Destri White overcame a slow start and passed for 189 yards and three scores as Mesquite Horn dominated the final three quarters in a 48-21 win over Tyler Lee in the District 12-5A opener for both at E.H. Hanby Stadium.

Horn took advantage of three Lee turnovers and turned a close affair into a rout, scoring 31 points in the second quarter.

Horn (5-0, 1-0) scored twice in a 19-second span in the second quarter and turned an eight-point deficit into a lead it would not relinquish.

The teams scored a combined 45 points in a wild second quarter. Lee racked up 207 yards and 21 points in the first half but was shut out in the second half with most of its 126 yards coming in garbage time.

Lee started the game with a 15-play, 78 yard drive and went ahead 7-0 with 3:13 remaining in the first quarter when Tavon Wesley scored on a one yard run.

Horn tailback Justyn Oliphant scored on a 4-yard run with 6:48 remaining in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 14-13. Horn recovered the ensuing kickoff at the Lee 27 yard line. Jarrison Stewart raced 27 yards on the next play from scrimmage to give Horn a 20-14 lead.

Lee (3-2, 0-1) recovered a fumble at the Horn 20 with 2:43 remaining before half and it appeared as if Lee would regain its momentum. Two plays later Lee fumbled and Horn defensive lineman Christian Bacon returned it 72 yards to give Horn a 27-14 lead.

Lee answered 17 seconds later. Raleigh Poster passed 56 yards to Bryce Wilkerson on the next play to make it 27-21.

Stewart returned the ensuing kickoff to the Lee 37. Four plays later Destri White found a wide open Del'Michael High on a post route to give Horn its second 13-point lead of the quarter with 38 seconds remaining.

Lee marched into the red zone to start the second half but Horn defensive back Nehemiah Wagner intercepted Zach Hall at the Horn six. Lee turned the ball over on downs at the Horn 39 on its next series. It would not threaten again.

White completed 14 of 26 passes. Oliphant finished with 14 carries for 83 yards. High finished with six receptions for 81 yards.

Wesley finished with 73 yards and two scores to lead Lee. Lee rushed 43 times for 177 yards and finished with 333 total yards.
