Oklahoma Offers Lufkin’s Carl Williams
Lufkin defensive tackle Carl Williams became the first East Texas recruit in the 2019 class to receive multiple Division I FBS scholarship offers from schools that compete in the Power 5 conferences.
Williams (6-3, 275) tweeted Thursday that Oklahoma has offered.
The Panthers' standout was previously offered by TCU, also from the Big 12. Williams' other FBS opportunities are from SMU and Tulsa.
Williams is also the first 2019 East Texan with an offer from OU, which has also extended invitations to three area prospects in the 2018 class -- Marshall offensive lineman and LSU commit Chasen Hines, Carthage running back Keaontay Ingram, and Arp safety DeMarvion Overshown.
As a sophomore, Williams helped guide Lufkin to a 7-4 season, which ended with a heartbreaking 50-49 loss to John Tyler in the bi-district round of the Class 6A Division II playoffs.
Williams will be a key returnee for Lufkin in 2017, along with other potential 2018 college prospects like receiver Malik Jackson, offensive linemen Joseph Bell and Hunter Hollis, receiver/defensive end Breylon Garcia, and defensive backs Savon Fields and Jeremiah Davis.
Oklahoma has been the class of the Big 12 Conference in recent seasons. The Sooners have won four league championships since 2010 and also have finished four seasons as top 10 teams.
The 2016 Oklahoma team rallied from early-season losses against Houston and Ohio State for an undefeated Big 12 season and a Sugar Bowl win against Auburn.
Williams will become eligible to sign with any program that offers him in December of 2018.
