Undefeated Van + Alto Enter Latest Associated Press Top 10 Poll
East Texas had two teams make their season debuts in this week's Associated Press top 10 polls following impressive Week 5 performances.
Van (5-0) is No. 10 in the latest Class 4A poll after the Vandals blew past previously-unbeaten Paris North Lamar, 45-13, on Friday night. The Vandals have outscored their opposition, 233-55, entering their bye week.
In Class 2A, the Alto Yellow Jackets (4-0) are No. 9 following a stunning 72-21 rout of third-ranked Tenaha over the weekend. Alto, which is also on bye this week, has cumulatively outscored its opponents, 237-83.
John Tyler (3-1) moved up two spots to No. 5 in the Class 5A poll after the Lions' 52-17 defeat of Whitehouse in Friday's District 16-5A opener. JT plays host to Lindale this Friday.
Lufkin (2-2) dropped its second consecutive game -- 38-35 to Nacogdoches -- but remained in the poll at No. 9. The Panthers host Whitehouse this Friday night. Nacogdoches (4-0) is receiving votes.
Gilmer (5-0) remained No. 3 in the 4A rankings after a 58-21 victory over Carthage last Saturday night in Longview. The Buckeyes, who are off this week, have outscored their opponents by a combined score of 283-101.
Gladewater (4-1), Atlanta (5-0) and Tatum (2-2) all received votes in the 4A poll.
There are an East Texas-best three teams in the Class 3A poll. Corrigan-Camden (4-0), which was off last week, moved up one spot to No. 4. Meanwhile, Malakoff (5-0) and Waskom (3-1) held steady at No. 8 and 9, respectively. Corrigan-Camden is at Diboll, Waskom plays at Frankston, and Malakoff is on bye this Friday.
Arp (3-0) received votes.
Tenaha (3-1), which is off this week, dropped out of the top 10 in 2A but is still receiving votes. Shelbyville (4-0) is also receiving votes from state pollsters.
