Eleven East Texans Receive All-Tournament Honors for UIL Baseball State Championships
Eleven players from East Texas schools were honored with all-tournament recognition for the 2013 UIL Baseball State Championships.
Class A state champion Carlisle was represented by four players, including junior pitcher Zach Brightwell, the state championship game Most Valuable Player.
Other Carlisle players on the all-tournament team were sophomore third baseman Ben Goss, junior shortstop Caleb Colley and senior outfielder Shadow Sanders.
The Indians defeated Stamford 6-1 last Thursday to claim the school's first-ever state championship.
In Class 3A, state finalist Pleasant Grove had three players make the all-tournament team: senior second baseman Alex Alsup, freshman third baseman Joe Pearlman and junior outfielder Dylan Silvey.
Pleasant Grove, which was making its record-breaking sixth consecutive state tournament appearance, fell to La Grange 10-2 in the 3A final last Thursday in Austin.
Hughes Springs, the 2A state finalist, also placed three players on the all-tournament squad. Junior pitcher Dylan Moore, junior catcher Chad McKinney and sophomore outfielder Hunter Smith all shared in the honor.
Hallettsville defeated Hughes Springs 4-2 in the 2A title game last Thursday in Round Rock.
Class 4A state semifinalist Whitehouse was represented by junior pitcher Patrick Mahomes, the starting pitcher in the Wildcats' 3-2 loss to Corpus Christi Moody in their semifinal meeting last Thursday night in Round Rock.
