Every once in a while, a player must go above and beyond in order to lead his team to victory. That's exactly what took place last Friday night in College Station.

Lufkin senior quarterback Tyler Stubblefield passed for 562 yards and eight touchdowns in Panthers' wild 71-68, four-overtime win over A&M Consolidated.

For his efforts, Stubblefield is the ETSN.fm Dairy Queen Offensive Player of the Week.

Stubblefield's eight TDs went to three different Panthers. Key'vantanie Coutee and Jamal Jeffery each had three, while JaBryce Taylor finished with 14 catches for 259 yards and two TDs.

"After the first half he really got into a rhythm," Lufkin coach Todd Quick said of Stubblefield's performance. "It started with the first drive of the second half. We got the opportunity to get the offense back on the field and they went down and scored to get us back in the game. He just looked to get into a rhythm and he started reading what they were doing defensively.

"But it didn't matter what they were doing. He'd find the open receiver and located who they had double covered."

What makes the performance even more impressive was that it was the District 14-5A opener on the road against A&M Consolidated, which upset the five-time defending state champion Lake Travis Cavaliers the week before.

"It's a tough situation anytime you go on the road, anywhere," Quick said. "You've got to be able to get on the bus, get off the bus and play. It was like (the pressure) didn't even bother him. It just seemed like he got faster and stronger, and we want to see him in those situations and see what he can do after making adjustments."

Lufkin (3-2, 1-0), thankfully, has a bye this week. Quick hopes the dramatic victory pays dividends for the Panthers down the road.

"We won't really know until next Friday how they've handled this," he said. "Our game two weeks ago (45-14 loss to Longview) and last week were two totally separate games. We need to be able to use something from both to help us in the district race and later on in the playoffs."
