JACKSONVILLE -- The New Summerfield Hornets wrapped up their first season of organized boy's soccer Saturday with a 3-1 win against Van for the Small School Soccer Championship Tournament title at Jacksonville College.

The Hornets' Jose Mendoza had two championship goals in a cold, rainy and windy game. Oscar Torres added the other score in New Summerfield's win.

Sweepers Cesar Hernandez and Gerardo Sainz as well as keeper Abel Servin were key contributors in the defensive effort for the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

The Hornets (11-5-0) won nine straight games to wrap up the 2014 season, including a 6-1 victory against Crockett in the tournament's semifinal round.

The Small School Soccer Championship is a league for East Texas soccer programs that are not in a UIL district. New Summerfield boy's soccer will join the UIL next season in the 2A classification.
