Tatum’s Opportunistic Defense Carries Eagles Past Godley, 41-8
ATHENS — The Tatum Eagles capitalized on a barrage of Godley turnovers en route to a 41-8 victory Friday night in a Class 2A Division I Region III area playoff at Bruce Field.
Tatum (9-2) turned four Godley turnovers into four touchdowns, helping the Eagles advance to the regional semifinals where they will face Franklin next week.
C.J. Whitaker’s interception led to Darian Brooks’ 55-yard touchdown pass to Deyonta Robertson, which came after Godley took an 8-0 lead to begin the game.
Brooks hooked up with Andrew Stocker for a 22-yard touchdown and a 14-8 lead after Tatum recovered a Godley fumble on the ensuing possession.
The Eagles began to pull away in the third quarter when Jaylon Shans’ 11-yard touchdown run followed his interception on defense.
Brooks added a 45-yard TD pass to Whitaker and Shaq Johnson scored from 2 yards out before Godley’s final turnover of the night — an interception by Javolick Garrett — set up Demetrius Hill’s 41-yard touchdown run.
