ATHENS – The Athens Hornets moved to 3-0 on the season with a 41-7 win over the Gladewater Bears Friday night at Bruce Field.

Athens is perfect through three games for the first time since the 2008 season.

The Hornets' victory looked much like the first two this season – with Athens playing stingy defense and controlling the clock with a bruising running game. Athens rushed 52 times for 324 yards, pushing its season team rushing total over the 1,000-yard mark.

The Bears, who scored a 25-14 win over the Hornets last season, fell to 1-2.

Devin Hall and Logan Fuller each rushed for 103 yards. Hall found the end zone twice and Fuller scored his third touchdown in two games. Athens had its way in the trenches against a Gladewater defensive line that features junior tackle Daylon Mack, who has double-digit offers from some of the top college football programs in the nation.

The Hornets, who have scored first in each of their first three games, got on the board late in the first quarter on Fuller's 7-yard touchdown run.

Four minutes into the second quarter, the Hornets found the end zone again on Anthony Sanders' 5-yard pass to tight end Nic Fincher. Less than two minutes later, K.J. Cumby returned an interception 51 yards for a score to push the lead to 21-0.

Gladewater responded with a quick score when quarterback Nick Canaguier found the end zone on a 22-yard run with 5:01 to go in the second quarter. It was a promising development for an offense that had struggled to that point, but the Bears couldn't parlay that drive into future success. Gladewater managed just 56 yards in the second half and three first downs.

It was a much different story for the Hornets, who got touchdown runs from Hall covering 9 and 38 yards and a 27-yard pass from Sanders to SMU-commit Chris Jefferson.

James Reese led the Bears with 59 yards rushing on eight carries, while Marcello Jackson had 58 yards on the ground on 12 rushes.
