ONALASKA -- Mason Huffines did it all for Elkhart in a 10-0, six-inning win against Onalaska in the two team's District 21-3A opener Wednesday.

It began and ended with the senior pitcher. He pitched a one-hit game and ended it at the plate with a three-run homer, a hit which forced the umpires to call the game an inning early in favor of the Elks (6-3, 1-0).

Freshman Trent Huff batted 3-for-4 in the game with a double. Lane Lisicecki also recorded a double on a 3-for-3 night.

Huffines batted 2-for-4.

Elkhart will back out of league play and participate in Edgewood's tournament through the weekend.

 

Stars Come Out For Center In Win Over Tatum

TATUM -- Center edged Tatum, 3-1, in a true pitcher's duel.

LSU-Shreveport commitment Jacob Mitchell allowed two hits and struck out nine batters in a complete game win for the Roughriders. Tatum's Beau Craig was saddled with the loss despite six complete innings of work on the hill and the Eagles' two hits.

Aside from Mitchell, three other college-bound Center players had notable nights.

Both of Panola College commitment Taylor Tomlin's two hits went for doubles and he earned two RBIs in the game. Dalton Horton (TCU) also recorded an RBI. Josh Burns (UT-Tyler) batted 2-for-3.

 

Hawkins' Derek Craft Pitches No-Hitter

HAWKINS -- Derek Craft threw a no-hitter in a run-rule shortened game, a 15-0 win against Union Hill to open the District 19-2A season.

Craft threw 11 strikeouts in the outing and led the Hawks with three hits and three RBIs.

Chris Sneed and Caleb Turning both recorded two RBIs in the rout.

Hawkins will visit Beckville on Saturday.

 

Hemphill Wins With Suicide Squeeze In Extras

WODEN -- Hemphill remained undefeated and got its first District 22-3A win of the year with a 1-0 victory against Woden in the eighth inning.

Tyler Davis laid down a bunt and a charging Hunter Phillips beat the throw at home to give the Hornets (7-0, 1-0) the lead.

Andrew Wood closed the game in the bottom of the eighth en route to an eight-inning shutout. He struck out 12 of 29 batters faced and allowed just three walks and a hit.

Hemphill will be back in action Tuesday against Corrigan-Camden.

 

Gary's Landon Odom Earns Win Against Tenaha

TENAHA -- Gary's Landon Odom struck out 13 of 17 Tenaha batters faced in a 7-1, District 23-2A win.

The Bobcats (2-5, 1-0) scored seven runs on seven hits. Tenaha recorded four hits in the game, two after Odom was pulled.

The win was Odom's second of the season. He has a 2-1 pitching record.

Gary will face Mt. Enterprise on Tuesday.

 

Van Takes Down Rusk In Extras 

LINDALE -- The Vandals scratched out a 5-4 win in the eighth inning against Rusk in non-district game Wednesday at Lindale's facility.

Cole Newsome led off Van's frame with a double and was batted in by Robbie Davis to end the game.

Van opens its District 22-4A schedule at 1 p.m. today at Emory Rains.
