The Brownsboro Bears struggled through a 1-9 season a year ago, but are one of this year's surprise teams. And senior quarterback Shelby Rogers is helping to lead the way.

Rogers passed for 157 yards three touchdowns and ran for 106 yards and another score in the Bears' 40-21 win over Mineola last Friday, earning ETSN.fm + Dairy Queen Offensive Player of the Week honors.

The victory improved Brownsboro to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in District 15-3A.

“He’s one of the kids that plays on both sides for us," Brownsboro's second-year coach Ty Thomison said of Rogers. "He’s a big part of what we’re doing and we’re having a pretty good year. He’s making big plays, sometimes with his arm and sometimes with his legs. He’s a big part of the success we’re having.”

Rogers piloted a Bears offense that rolled up 33 first-half points against Mineola.

“On the first play from scrimmage, he had a big run for a touchdown," Thomison said. "That kind of got us jump-started, and we kind of rolled from there in the first half. We put a lot of points on the board in the first half and a lot of that was because of the way he played.”

Brownsboro faces Van (6-1, 2-0) on the road Friday in a huge district showdown.
