By the Numbers: A Look At East Texas’ 2015 Recruiting Class

Recruiting has picked up steadily over the last six weeks in East Texas, especially for the Nacogdoches tandem of 2015 corner back Jaylon Lane and 2016 safety Brandon Jones, who seemed to receive offers on a daily basis at the moment.

But we’re only getting started. Several more offers are expected for the group of 16 East Texans in the 2015 class that currently already hold at least one offer from a Division I FBS program. With summer camp season on the horizon, expect more to go out not only for the current offer holders, but to players from all across the talent-rich area of East Texas.

As we embark on the final couple months of spring, ETSN.fm thought it prudent to further examine the state of recruiting in East Texas.

Below you’ll find lists pointing to which college programs, conferences and recruits have been the most active in the area.

When doing the research, we discovered a few items some might find surprising. For instance, it’s no secret that Texas A&M currently has the loudest recruiting buzz in the state. But the Aggies are fifth among FBS programs when it comes to the numbers of offers to East Texas recruits in the 2016 class.

Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M each have seven 2015 offers out to the region — one more than A&M. That might explain why the Big 12 holds a 38-28 edge on the SEC at the moment regarding East Texas offers.

But don’t let that fool you. A&M has commitments from three of the six East Texans it’s offered — Whitehouse safety Justin Dunning, Gladewater defensive tackle Daylon Mack and Sulphur Springs safety Larry Pryor. The Aggies have also offered both of the 2016 recruits from the area with an offer — Jones and Athens athlete Travon Fuller. And there’s still plenty of time for coach Kevin Sumlin and Co. to swoop in and make a few more East Texans targets.

A&M is one of only three programs to have commitments from 2015 recruits from the area. Baylor has a pair of pledges — Longview running back JaMycal Hasty and Troup quarterback/athlete Blake Lynch. Louisiana Tech has a commitment from Tyler Lee linebacker Brandon Durman.

Another surprising element concerning the 2015 East Texas recruiting class is the amount of programs outside of the immediate area interested in filling their rosters with the region’s unique blend of size, speed athleticism.

Notre Dame, Florida State, Clemson and Oregon have all expressed interest in at least two East Texas recruits.

The Fighting Irish have been the most active with offers out to four players from the area. However, Lane is the only one of the four who has yet to commit. Florida State has three offers to East Texas in 2015, including one to the undecided Kris Boyd, an athlete from Gilmer.

Overall, 10 conferences and 43 unique programs are represented in the 2015 East Texas recruiting class. Lane, who picked up his East Texas-leading 22nd offer from Missouri on Tuesday, holds offers from nine different conferences.
