Hughes Springs Moves to 5-0 With 43-0 Rout of New Diana
HUGHES SPRINGS -- The Hughes Springs Mustangs rolled past the New Diana Eagles, 43-0, Friday night in District 9-2A Division II action.
Hughes Springs (5-0, 2-0) relied on savvy defensive play and a strong running game.
Trenton Shelton passed for 62 yard and a touchdown, while also carrying the ball six times for 105 yards and two scores. Michael Martinez added to the ground attack with 107 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
Defensively, Dustin Garamillo, Chad McKinney, and Kane Sampson all had interceptions.
Garrett Barton carried the ball 16 times for 59 yards for New Diana (3-2, 1-1).
The Mustangs engineered a six-play drive to open the contest, ending with a 43-yard touchdown run by Shelton for the first score, giving Hughes Springs a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing drive New Diana's nine-play came to a crashing halt when Hunter Smith picked up an Eagles fumble at the 4-yard line and raced 96 yards for the score.
With 8:06 left in the half, Shelton finished a 52-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run to give the Mustangs a 21-0 advantage.
After a New Diana punt to open the second half, Shelton found Eric Berryhill for a 27-yard touchdown pass. Late in the third quarter, backup quarterback Chad McKinney rumbled 29 yards up the middle for the game's last touchdown.
