John Tyler has a steep history of producing some of college and pro football's most elite players. And now, Lions senior quarterback Bryson Smith has etched his name in the school record books.

Smith's massive performance in JT's wild 50-49 playoff win over Lufkin last week put the signal-caller's name atop the John Tyler all-time rushing list. His 2,940 career rushing yards broke a record shared by former NFL running back Kendall Hunter and SMU receiver Jeremy Johnson.

Against Lufkin, Smith combined his talents of throwing and running to send his team to the second round of the playoffs. He completed 25 of 35 passes for 380 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing 20 times for 191 yards and three more scores.

For his efforts, Smith is the ETSN.fm/Dairy Queen Offensive Player of the Week. He follows last week's winner, Tyler Grace quarterback Christopher Wilhelmi.

Smith's touchdown passes covered 86, 28 and 37 yards, and his rushing scores came from 5, 13, and 11 yards.

On the season, Smith is 167 of 274 for 2,751 yards with 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also leads the team with 1,431 yards and 18 touchdowns on 148 rushing attempts.

Smith and John Tyler (10-1) face Dallas Jesuit (8-3) in the Class 6A Division II area-round playoffs at 2 p.m. Saturday from Mesquite Memorial Stadium.
