The Lufkin Panthers' official return to Class 6A football was a breeze, as they rolled past The Woodlands College Park, 58-17, in the District 12-6A opener last Friday night.

And no Lufkin player had a bigger imprint on the game than senior quarterback Kordell Rodgers.

The Panthers' star passed for 420 yards and six touchdowns in the win, and for his efforts, Rodgers is the ETSN.fm/Dairy Queen Offensive Player of the Week. He follows last week's winner, Alto quarterback Fred Thacker.

Rodgers, a Texas State commit, completed 22 of 26 attempts to nine different Lufkin receivers. His touchdown strikes covered 12, 48, 18, 50, 25, and 9 yards.

Receivers Dhailon Phillips and Malik Jackson each eclipsed the 100-yard mark. Phillips caught a team-best seven passes for 134 yards and a touchdowns, while Jackson had five catches for 167 yards and two scores.

For the season, Rodgers has completed 92 of 132 passes (70 percent) for 1,620 yards with 17 touchdowns and two interceptions.

Rodgers and his Lufkin (4-1, 1-0) teammates face a big test this Friday night at No. 7 The Woodlands (4-0).
