Devon Goguen did not put up the absolute best number in terms of sheer tackles in Week 7, but, man, he was efficient.

The junior Mineola defensive end recorded three sacks on his nine tackles in Friday's important District 8-3A Division I game against White Oak to headline an outstanding game from the Yellowjackets' entire front. For his efforts -- leading the charge for the area's best defensive performance against caliber of competition -- he is the ETSN.fm + Dairy Queen Defensive Player of the Week.

Goguen and company held White Oak's running game to zero yards or negative yardage on 16 of 38 carries. The opposition only managed to gain positive yardage on 57.9 percent of its rushing attempts, and the defensive front's pressure for 12 incomplete passes held White Oak to 54.9 percent overall in a 28-13 decision.

Mineola's offense countered with positive yardage on 31 of its 37 run plays, 83.7 percent, and earned yardage on 72.7 percent of all its snaps. That helped balance out the Yellowjackets' three turnovers to White Oak's zero.

Aside from nine total tackles and three sacks, Goguen recorded four quarterback hurries in the game.

Linebackers Kourtland Sinches, Mike Drennon and nose tackle Austin Anderson -- a Texas A&M offensive tackle commitment -- also did considerable damage in the effort. That ate into Goguen's opportunities.

It was an important victory for Mineola, the Associated Press' No. 1 Class 3A team and the 3A Division I state runner-up a season ago. White Oak returned critical pieces from a 2014 squad that finished second in the district with a 4-1 league record.

White Oak still has a few carryovers from its state semifinals team in 2013 as well.

Goguen isn't the first Yellowjackets defender to win the award. Junior cornerback Noah Sneed earned the honor following Week 4 with three interceptions in a 35-17 win against Wills Point.

Mineola has another big game this week against Harmony, a team that has worked its way out to a 5-1 overall record and is currently tied for first place within the district.
