Tatum Sweeps Area Track + Field Meet

TATUM -- The Lady Eagles rolled and the Eagles edged Jefferson to clinch dual titles for Tatum at the District 19-2A/District 20-2A track and field championships Friday evening.

Jefferson's Terrence Whitaker and Deion Williams were the meet's top two boys point-scorers, combining for 47. But Tatum, which got 18 points from Jaylon Shans-Sheppard, beat the Bulldogs 108-104 for the top spot. New Diana (93) and Daingerfield (86) placed third and fourth, respectively.

Hooks' Jimmie Houston, who won the 300-meter hurdles and got second in the 110-meter hurdles, scored 21 points for the No. 3 spot among boys individuals.

Tatum's girls claimed their championships by a 39-point margin, outscoring Daingerfield 133-94, followed by White Oak (92), Paul Pewitt (75), and Jefferson (74). Ro'neshia Simpson's 24 points led Tatum and were second among girls individuals, while teammates Vanessa Tirado, Kenija Collier, and Kiana Turner scored 18 points apiece.

"As long as we could get three relays, triple jump, 400, and the 100 out, then I knew we'd be good," said Tatum girls track coach Danny Mitchell. "And if we got anything extra, which we got the 800 and the mile going to regionals, those were just added. I'm satisfied with it. They performed well."

Paul Pewitt's Chadnee Knox led all girls individuals with 31 points. Knox won the long jump and finished second in the triple jump and 100-meter dash. Simpson won the 400-meter run and helped the Lady Eagles win the mile relay.

Complete results are listed below. The top four finishers in each event advance to the Class 2A Region III track and field championships at Whitehouse's Wildcat Stadium on April 26-27.
